The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, written originally in English, has since been translated, with varying degrees of success, into dozens of other languages. Tolkien, an expert in Germanic philology, scrutinized those that were under preparation during his lifetime, and had comments that reflect both the translation process and his work. To aid translators, and because he was unhappy with some choices made by early translators such as Åke Ohlmarks, Tolkien wrote his Guide to the Names in The Lord of the Rings (1967).

Tolkien, expert en philologie germanique, a étudié avec soin les traductions prévues et parues de son vivant et les a abondamment commentées, tant du point de vue du processus de traduction que de son œuvre en tant que telle. Afin d'aider les traducteurs, et parce qu'il juge certains choix des premiers traducteurs du livre malheureux, Tolkien rédige en 1966-1967 une « Nomenclature of The Lord of the Rings », publiée en 1975 sous le nom de « Guide to the Names in The Lord of the Rings ».
